My art is a journey. An inward journey influenced by my outward encounters and expressed in a mix
of materials that are ‘sourced’ from my immediate environment.
My works redefine the concept of ‘material exhaustion’ by making a deliberate effort to extend the
lives of discarded materials. Recycling is simply restitution. It is an attempt to make right a harmful
act to the environment.
It is the prolonging of the lives of objects that deplete the environs in other to prevent further
depletion.
My works address this process and all it constitutes. By environment, I include the human body and
its well being….
I have worked with rags, discarded foam (spongy rubber) Wood backs, old newspapers, old shoes
etc and have been able to breathe ‘newness’ into these objects.
I am presently working on 2 major projects. The first I titled “Of emotions and moods…” which
constitutes torn up pants and shirts (rags) paired up with different objects. This project harbours on
issues that relate directly to ‘man’; his struggles, evils and ‘goods’. It consists of both 2 and 3-
dimensional pieces.
The second body of works directly addresses recycling; as these works are executed in latex foam
mattresses fashioned into ‘food’ and other pieces that discuss waste and the environment. The
project is multi-faceted and encompasses the concepts of first impressions, the artists’ role in
addressing societal issues and also casually touches on the importance of food to the human race
(man)
This project was first carried out as a performance in Tambacounda, Senegal where I carefully
fashioned pastries out of picked-up foam (from the streets of Tambacounda) and sold them at a
regular market place for the people of Tamba to purchase. (Pictures of this are attached)
Both projects have been ongoing since 2004.
